MS collaborating with Girls Math and Science Project

Ellis Middle School girls are exploring careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) through a new collaboration with The Girls, Math and Science Partnership (GMSP).
This week, Ellis MS girls will try out the Can*TEEN interactive toolkit, which engages girls ages 11-14 in learning about careers in STEM fields. The Can*TEEN interactive toolkit helps girls learn about and see themselves in STEM careers.

A primary component of the toolkit is a DVD game that guides girls through careers in STEM  disciplines.  The questions  in the game are presented by virtual hosts, or avatars, based in part on Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences.

Each avatar guide in the game has unique personality and interests, which are meant to map to the interests of middle school-aged girls. The toolkit places special emphasis on incorporating educational techniques and gender–equity methodology that are proven to best engage girls in STEM academics and careers.

The Girls Math and Science Partnership is an initiative of the Carnegie Science Center. The Can*TEEN project was distributed in collaboration with the American Association of School Librarians.
