Two Ellis students accepted to Westinghouse Science Honors Institute
Ellis juniors Wenqin Wang '15 of Fox Chapel and Zijing Li '15 of Friendship have both been accepted into the Westinghouse Science Honors Institute. Li and Weng join a group of nearly 500 high school juniors from Western PA who were nominated based on high academic standing and a passion for STEM learning.
The Westinghouse Science Honors Institute (WSHI) is an annual program that introduces students to an array of STEM careers while allowing them to network with real-world professionals. Through a series of 11 Saturday morning lectures held between October 2013 and March 2014, students explore current science topics such as bioengineering, forensic investigation, robotics, materials science, lasers, and more. A special field trip to Penn State University's Breazeale nuclear reactor provides an opportunity to learn about nuclear engineering first-hand.
Each year, Westinghouse receives more nominations than there are spaces into the program. Acceptance into the WSHI is considered a prestigious honor and it is often credited with inspiring students to major in a STEM area in college. Since 1958, the WSHI has served more than 15,000 students, many of whom have gone on to successful STEM careers. We are extremely proud to have two students representing The Ellis School at the WSHI this year!
