Ellis girls donate books, funds to Ethiopian libraries
Last week, Ellis Lower School students organized the "Bring a Book, Buy a Book" book sale to raise funds for a school in Ethiopia that has no library materials. Ellis students collected $361.10 for the nonprofit Ethiopia Reads, which was founded by children's book author Jane Kurtz.
When Kurtz was a child her family moved from Portland Oregon to Ethiopia, where she spent most of her childhood. Ethiopia Reads has founded 65 libraries in that country to date and provides books to children who have no access schools or reading materials.
To put the Ellis donations in context, $2 funds one Ethiopian language children's story book, which are given for free to children in that country, while $750 funds the purchase of enough Ethiopian language story books and reference materials for an entire library.
"When Ellis students learned that students in Ethiopia might not have access to school or books, they are very excited to donate books and raise money. It is in their nature to give back to others," said Lower School teacher Jessica Nolan, who serves on a committee of teachers who organize service learning projects for Ellis students.
