The Ellis School is now a founding member of a new nationwide network of independent girls' schools and STEM professionals working together to support science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education for girls. The Girls Advancing in STEM (GAINS) Scholar Network will connect upper school girls and faculty interested in STEM with young alumnae and women leaders from STEM-related universities, labs, companies, and organizations around the world. The GAINS Scholar Network will provide role models, virtual mentors, and networking opportunities for women and girls at various stages of their educations and careers.
"The world needs accomplished, confident, and competent women in all fields, especially in STEM where women have for too long been underrepresented," said Ellis Head of School Robin Newham. "The GAINS Scholar network allows girls' schools to significantly improve our ability to share resources and expertise in STEM for the good of all of our students. It is an honor and a privilege to take part."
The GAINS Scholar Network will be open to all Ellis Upper School students and will tap the School's existing programs and networks, such as Girls of Steel, the Geek Squad, and STEM-related externships through the School's Venture Program. Ellis girls will connect with the GAINS Scholar Network's virtual mentoring and social media platforms where they can meet like-minded students and adults. That type of networking and modeling is invaluable, according to Dr. Lisa Abel-Palmieri, the Ellis School's Director of Technology and Innovation, who will lead the School's participation in the GAINS network.
"As a young woman, I was often one of the only girls in my STEM classes and later often the only woman in male-dominated workplaces. Girls no longer have to go it alone. Connecting Ellis students to a nationwide network of female role models and mentors provides girls with the support and inspiration they need to lead the way in STEM majors and careers," said Dr.Abel-Palmieri.
Relationships with role models and mentors have a significant impact on young women as they consider pursuing STEM-related careers and fields of study. Connecting Ellis students with peers and mentors who have similar passions will encourage them to further develop their interest in these fields.
The GAINS Scholar Network will provide role models who will share their experience in STEM-related fields with students on a regular basis, and will help its members establish mentor relationships with women working and studying in STEM fields from a variety of stages of career development. The GAINS network will also provide virtual mentoring events throughout the academic year where mentors will blog about their career paths, engage in discussion with students, and highlight careers that students otherwise might not have been aware.
The GAINS Network was created by the Greenwich Academy, and its founding member schools are Castilleja School, The Ellis School, Hockaday School, Harpeth Hall, Hathaway Brown, and Marymount School, all of which are girls' schools leading the way in STEM and innovation in their communities.
