Peruvian Congresswoman speaks at Ellis

Ellis Upper School students heard from Congresista Carmen Omonte on April 28, 2015 when she spoke to students about the role of women and politics in Peru. Ellis AP Spanish students shared the stage with her and translated her talk, live and in real time, into English for faculty and students. World Languages Department Chair and Spanish teacher Jack Gaddess assisted with the translation.
Ms. Omonte was elected in 2011 and is a member of the Peru Possible political party, which currently holds the majority in that country. She served as Minister for Women and Vulnerable Populations in 2014-15.

“Now more than ever it is important for women to enter political careers,” Congresista Omonte told the Ellis students. “The world sees women as having a more holistic vision. We must take advantage of this moment as women. It is our moment.”

She also said that her generation has an obligation to open doors for younger women to political, social, and business opportunities.

“Women in positions of power make the world better for everyone,” she said.

Congresista Omonte was in Pittsburgh to visit with local business and university leaders. Omonte works with Go Time Ministries, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit that enables small business owners in Peru to grow and engage in commerce with Pittsburgh-based businesses. It also provides medical access to low-income communities in Peru. For her senior project, Ellis student Abby Furlong has been working closely with Congresista Omonte on Peruvian-based aid projects for women and children in that country. Go Time Ministries is run by Abby's father Reverend Brent Furlong.

The Ellis community is proud to have hosted her!
