Ellis Competes at FIRST LEGO League Grand Championships
The STEAM Powered Girls and Ellis Robotic Tigers, Ellis’ two Middle School robotics teams, competed in the FIRST LEGO League Grand Championship at Sewickley Academy on December 7 and 8, 2018. To conclude their seasons, both teams earned special recognition for their programming efforts and had solid performances at the table during the final robot games of the year.
On Friday, the teams presented their robots and research projects to three panels of judges, and Saturday was spent at the table where the girls controlled their robots to complete specific tasks and missions in hopes of beating their season-best scores. The Ellis Robotic Tigers finished with a season-high score of 76 and placed 19th out of 49 teams, and the STEAM Powered Girls placed 23rd with a score of 64. Since the beginning of the school year, the Middle School robotics’ teams have been fine-tuning and finessing their robots, working on their programming skills, and competing in local scrimmages. This hands-on extracurricular activity encourages students to think outside the box, troubleshoot as a team, and problem solve on the fly—all while driving their interest in STEM.
