I am filled with an overwhelming sense of anticipation and excitement for the many interactions I will have with the students, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, and alumnae of the Ellis community in the upcoming school year. I believe in the strong connections and foundation that have been built within the halls of Ellis, and I’ve seen how that extends to the greater Ellis community. I know that through our collective commitment to each other, we will continue to grow in many positive ways.
The summer already offered many opportunities for me to meet and connect with this wonderful community. From the first days of my arrival I have been heartened by the warmth and enthusiasm I’ve received, and I look forward to developing individual relationships throughout the year. Ellis is a tapestry of experiences, complemented by the growth and change that take place in our students each year, and—as you will read in the stories in this issue—that have taken place in the school over time. My heart's passion is teaching and learning, and working together to achieve much for the benefit of our students. My motivation for leadership can be found in their smiles.
Carol Dweck wrote Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, a book about the psychology of how our brains can be wired for success and achievement. Her writings explore the fundamental practice of self-dialogue. What do we tell ourselves during times of change? How do we grow from our experiences? As a school leader, I wake each morning seeking the positive, uplifting, or strategic growth that moves toward a worthy outcome. Whether coaching a healthy classroom climate, discussing strategic planning, or developing community partnerships, collaboration and decision-making, even on a micro level, move us toward a larger and greater outcome.
This fall, I will make my debut as both a Pittsburgher and the new Head of School for Ellis, and it is an honor. I am grateful to be a part of a group of educators who share an affinity for girls' education. I am grateful to be among the parents and alumnae who are committed to seeking the best for our students. I look forward to each step we take together!
