John Miller, Ph.D., former Head of the English department at The Ellis School, returned on February 7, 2012 to celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens.
Dr. Miller shared information with the Class of 2012 about Dickens’ travels to the United States in 1842 and his three day stay in Pittsburgh. Referring to his research on this visit to Pittsburgh, Dr. Miller theorized, lightheartedly, that Dickens’ idea of spirits visiting Ebenezer Scrooge in The Christmas Carol may come from the author’s inspection of Western Penitentiary.
In one short hour, Dr. Norma Greco demonstrated the strength and power of a mentoring relationship as evidence by her own career-long association with Dr. Miller, the joys and revelations of research, and a glimpse into Pittsburgh life in the Victorian age, all of which was consumed by the seniors with tea and scones!
