Ellis chemistry teacher Erica Holtgraver took her Upper School Anatomy and Physiology class to Allegheny General Hospital on January 15 to observe an open heart surgery. Students observed the surgery from an observation room that was separated from the operating theater by a glass partition.
Field trips like this fulfill The Ellis School’s commitment to exposing students to real-world opportunities that inspire our girls to a range of exciting careers and learning opportunities they might not otherwise experience. Ellis students observed the daily responsibilities of medical professionals. The experience also brought to life the anatomy lessons that students are learning at Ellis.
The class also met with retired surgeon Dr. Burkholder who answered their many questions about his profession and the ongoing surgery.
When asked what she learned from the experience, Ellis senior Mackenzie Haney said, “I really enjoyed seeing all the commotion that goes on in an operating room. I did not realize how many people they had in one room. Every person was constantly working or running around to check on a monitor...It was really cool to see how all the organs fit together like the heart and the lungs...Overall it was a great experience and definitely something i would like to observe again!”
